Eternity of Testing
Testing is part of an American's life
in great magnitude, brings lots of strife
fetuses suffer all kinds of tests
before they even leave the womb,
x-ray, blood tests, amniotic invasions
sonograms, so many tests loom
after he's born come shots in the heel,
medical evaluations for diseases that kill
hearing and vision, vaccinations and serum
testing the whole body for problems to fear
upon starting school - coordination, readiness
skill development and right-left handedness
intelligence, ability, more hearing and vision.
alphabet, letters, and also child nutrition
into elementary, there's progress to score
mental ability, physical stamina, academic, more
social skills, report grades, standardized tests
daily, weekly, semester - you know the rest
in school and life – some bring a tear
attitude, discipline, psychological, career
achievement, mastery, graduation, writing,
vocational, college entrance, aptitude, driving
job skills tests - typing, computer, performance
transcripts, licensing, certifications, lie dormant
drug tests, background, driving, and credit check
continuing education, lie detector, what to expect?
into retirement and at ripe old age,
here come medical tests with a rage
ill health sets in, might as well go with a smile
the tests verify he's old and been around a while
upon drawing Earth's final sweet breath
certain tests verify that one is dead
a number of hours without oxygen
will bring a verdict of “back to dust” again …
Then here you stand in Heaven so sweet
where the BIG TEST comes at the Father's feet
and you have to account for results of His tests
and he judges whether you've done your best.
Do you think there's voice and harp tests
up there for the Heavenly Band?
If so, I guess all the testing
will begin over again.
